Lead the Way has secured a grant from the North Halifax Partnership’s Staying Well Project to continue its popular ‘Dance and Smile’ classes for another year, supporting both people with learning disabilities and their carers.

People with learning disabilities face significant health and social inequalities, with fewer inclusive opportunities to stay active and a much greater risk of loneliness and social isolation.

‘Dance and Smile’ helps bridge that gap — a fun, dance-based exercise class set to popular musical theatre tunes, offering an enjoyable way to stay physically active while making new friends in a welcoming, supportive environment.

The classes take place at Forest Cottage in Halifax every Wednesday. Each one-hour session includes 45 minutes of movement followed by a 15-minute coffee and chat.

Karen Graham, Service Manager at Lead the Way, said:“ Our Dance and Smile classes play a vital role in the local learning disability community. They lift people’s spirits, bring friends together, and create a safe, joyful space where everyone can have fun and, most importantly, stay active. The smiles, laughter and confidence we see each week show just how much these sessions mean to the people who attend.

We are incredibly grateful to the North Halifax Partnership for their generous grant. Their support means we can continue offering these much-loved classes for another year, and we’re truly excited for everything the next 12 months will bring.”
